Unlike Obama and Clinton before him, Biden is running against a candidate only a few years his junior. It was a twist on how Clinton answered a question about Dole's age during the second presidential debate in 1996. There is not much precedent for the event Biden's campaign is putting on Thursday. Obama, Biden and Clinton will inevitably go down memory lane during a discussion moderated by comedian Stephen Colbert. Aside from private conversations, Biden also often directs his top aides to follow up with Obama or Clinton on various topics of conversation.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer recently discussed a long-shot idea with Sen. Joe Manchin: Making a late entry into the US Senate race in West Virginia to try to hold on to his seat as an independent. Manchin, who threw cold water on the idea and is still planning on retiring from the Senate, confirmed to CNN that he’s discussed the last-ditch bid with Schumer. “I think that’s a long, long, long-shot scenario,” Manchin said of running as an independent candidate. Blankenship ran as a Republican but lost in the 2018 Senate primary, later switching parties in 2024 to run in the contested Democratic primary to fill Manchin’s seat. “I understand the scenario,” Manchin told CNN.

The cost for a chance to pose in a photo with all three Democratic presidents at once? It's also the only time that three [Democratic] presidents have done a [campaign] fundraiser together." Democratic National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison, Biden campaign fundraisers Michael Pratt and Colleen Coffey and Biden campaign finance chair Rufus Gifford have all been instrumental, he said. "For people who are involved in politics, for people who love politics, the opportunity to be with the last three Democratic presidents … is something that's unique. It is worth remembering that there are no constitutional provisions regarding presidential primaries and very few details about the election of the president itself. AdvertisementWhat were early presidential elections like? In the wake of the violence, Democrats launched a massive overhaul of their presidential primary process. According to some officials who worked on the commission, their changes had the unintended effect of popularizing state presidential primary elections. In short, party officials’ hands are initially tied, even if they want to cast the deciding votes.

Once, when my father was in West Virginia on police business, a man approached him and demanded to know about “rumors” that President Franklin Roosevelt was “crippled.” The man threatened to beat up my father or anyone who said F.D.R. (I have a picture of my father, in a fedora, guarding Roosevelt at a Senators baseball game, with the president standing up with the help of his braces to throw out the first pitch.) Like others around Roosevelt, my dad kept a tight lip about the paralysis of the president, who did not want to seem weak. With the help of a complicit press corps, a censoring Secret Service and a variety of ruses, F.D.R. was even able to campaign giving the impression that he was mobile.

WASHINGTON — The Biden campaign has zeroed in on a likely date and location for a fundraiser with three Democratic presidents — Joe Biden, Barack Obama and Bill Clinton — according to three people familiar with the planning. The fundraiser is expected to take place on March 28 in New York City, possibly at Radio City Music Hall, these people said. A spokesperson for the Biden campaign said no details have been finalized, including venue or location. NBC News first reported last month that the Biden campaign was trying to organize a fundraiser with the current president and his two most recent Democratic predecessors. Obama and Clinton also remain popular leaders in the Democratic Party.

2024 seems to be quite the year for third-party presidential candidates. There’s Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who is running as an independent alternative to President Biden and President Donald Trump. There is Cornel West, professor of philosophy at Union Theological Seminary, who is also running as an independent. And later this year, we may have another entrant — Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia, who will retire from the Senate in January, at the end of his term. Manchin, a conservative Democrat, seems to think he’d be the perfect standard-bearer should the effort materialize.

Some around Biden agree Manchin may have a point in how to make the pitch. As Biden tries to assert the success of his presidency, Manchin says he shaped “everything” in the president’s agenda. “It’s been far less organized than he expected it to be” and “he doesn’t see a plan coming together,” a person familiar with Hogan’s thinking told CNN. “No matter what side of the fence you might be on, where you are for philosophically, we learned to navigate that,” he told CNN. Several anti-Trump Republicans who listened to Manchin’s speech told CNN they were happy to hear him.

Storms have walloped the Pacific Northwest, Midwest, Plains, South and Northeast with low temperatures, heavy snow, ice storms, freezing rain and high winds for the past two weeks. CHARLESTON, W.Va. WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democratic Senator Joe Manchin, who last week announced he will retire from the Senate at the end of next year, added to his party's woes on Wednesday when he said he "absolutely" would consider running for president in 2024. In an interview with NBC News, Manchin said: "Every American should consider it if they're in a position to help save the country." Democrats fear that a Manchin presidential run could draw votes away from President Joe Biden and hand former President Donald Trump a victory if he is the Republican nominee for the third presidential election in a row. Manchin told NBC that before deciding whether to mount a run for president he would have to gauge whether there is enough voter support for him. Manchin could also run as an independent, but would have to work fast to get on all 50 state ballots.

Manchin is not running for reelection in West Virginia next year and has flirted with a presidential bid. Wes Moore of Maryland on Sunday had a stark message for retiring Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia: Don't taint your political legacy by running for president in 2024. Moore then criticized the No Labels movement, which Manchin has flirted with, arguing that the organization lacked any clear policy tenets.

Manchin never defended the remark but was criticized by West Virginia Republicans for what his party’s nominee said. By 2022, coal mining employees in West Virginia made up nearly 30% of all coal employees in the country. John Deskins, director of the West Virginia University Bureau of Business and Economic Research, said 75% of West Virginia’s coal jobs were disappearing before coal production dropped because of mechanization. West Virginia Democratic Party Chair Mike Pushkin said Trump never fulfilled his promise. He said the state Democratic Party was branded “anti-jobs and anti-coal” because of environmental policies coming from the national party.

But the West Virginia senator’s Thursday announcement that he won’t seek reelection next year only refreshed a perennial question arising from his savvy instinct for accumulating power: What exactly is he up to? Second, the announcement immediately stoked speculation that Manchin is mulling a third-party presidential bid. Manchin’s decision to quit Washington comes as a formidable potential Republican challenger, West Virginia Gov. And if Manchin can’t win in the MAGA stronghold of West Virginia, it’s impossible to believe any other Democrat can. West Virginia was once a Democratic bastion, however.

The party in 2024 is defending Democratic-held seats in West Virginia, Montana and Ohio — all states that Trump carried handily in 2020. They have very few pickup opportunities — their best being Republican-held seats in Texas and Florida, both states Trump won twice. Meanwhile, the White House issued a statement praising Manchin's dedication to the people of West Virginia and his accomplishments in Washington. Biden said the Manchin family "should feel proud of the Senator’s service to West Virginia and to our country. Sen. Joe Manchin, the West Virginia Democrat who often bucked party leadership and flirted recently with leaving the party altogether, announced he would not seek reelection on Thursday in a blow to Democrats’ chances of retaining the seat. “After months of deliberation and long conversations with my family, I believe in my heart of hearts that I’ve accomplished what I set out to do for West Virginia,” Manchin said in a video statement posted on social media. “I have made one of the toughest decisions of my life and decided that I will not be running for reelection to the United States Senate.”Manchin, 76, was first elected to the Senate in 2010, after serving as the governor of West Virginia. He faced tough reelection prospects next year in the deep red state that had led many to question whether he would bow out of the race. What Mr. Manchin actually plans to do remains a mystery. Mr. Manchin has flirted this year with No Labels, a group that has made noise about running a centrist candidate for the White House. Some allies of Mr. Manchin are skeptical that he will run for president.
